Ceiling resurfacing comes into play when old ceiling surface has aged and discolored beyond that point where chemical cleaning is affective. For purposes of this article, only ceiling surfaces that are designed to treat the acoustics in the room are intended for discussion.

These ceiling surfaces may be composed of acoustical ceiling tiles, pop corn, acoustical plaster, various textured materials, ect. What they all have in common is a pigmented coating on the surface. And as that surface is exposed to ultra-violet light and environmental contamination, the white pigment loses its bright color and evolves into various shades of gray.

"While chemical cleaning may remove surface contamination, it does little to change the color of the pigment. Therefore, the only solution, short of removing the ceiling material and a complete replacement, is to apply a new surface coating in the desired color...new pigment...new color.

Anyone can buy a pail of ceiling paint and spray it up there. The problem is that conventional paint products do a significant damage to the sound absorbing characteristics of the ceiling material. That is why it is common to hear the complaint, "I had my ceilings painted and it's like an echo chamber in here ever since!"

The trick is to apply a new surface finish without doing damage to the acoustical and fire retardant qualities of the ceiling. In those cases where the ceiling is composed of ceiling tiles laying in a grid system, the second challenge is to apply the coating without leaving the tiles stuck to the grid. For doing so inhibits the ability to move the tiles to gain access above the ceiling for maintenance purposes.

Fortunately, the product technology and application methodology exists, and Acoustic Ceiling have been trained throughout the country in their application. Acoustic Ceiling provides this service speak in terms of "acoustical resurfacing" and/or "restoration." Our technicians are certified in the field and would never present their service as "ceiling cleaning" or "ceiling painting."

State-of-the-art "ceiling resurfacing" is made possible by the existence of a specialty coating designed specifically for this form of application. The first product of this type, made available for national distribution in 1983, was an acoustical coating developped by Procoat...Marketed today as ProCoustic, Acoustical Tile & Ceiling Coating. Virtually all applicator technicians who are certified in ceiling restoration utilize ProCoustic.
